Changing the world by changing hearts, minds and actions

The world is not a perfect place. As we look around we see the need for change: more sustainable practices, deeper compassion, greater justice and a stronger commitment to the common good. Many of us are working to see our vision of a better world realized. But we cannot do it alone. We need to bring others along so we can work together. Discovering why people act as they do and how we can effectively influence them is an important first step. Learning such skills as audience analysis, motivating for behavioral change and creating compelling messages in a wide variety of mediums will truly help you change hearts, minds, and actions.

Friends of Trees invited Courtney to speak alongside US Forest Service Researcher Geoffrey Donovan to teach government employees and volunteer tree boards how to take the science behind the benefits of trees and use that information to persuade property owners or elected officials to take action. The audience greatly appreciated the way Courtney explained persuasion in a simple and effective way. Personally, I found practicing in small groups at the end of the day to be a very effective way to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world.

Courtney Dillard's training workshops help participants take theory to practice. Courtney not only lays out fundamental theories of good communications strategy, but walks participants through the challenges of applying those fundamentals in their own work context. She is insightful, inspirational, and engaging. The workshops equip advocates with smarter, more effective messaging practices and the confidence and understanding to put them to work.

The Progressive's Pocketbook of Persuasion

The Progressive's Pocketbook of Persuasion teaches Progressives how to control the conversation once again and in turn retake the political reins of our country. In ten informative chapters, addressing the most important aspects of persuasion in the political realm, The Progressive's Pocketbook of Persuasion provides a much-needed toolkit for talking effectively about the key issues facing America today. Each chapter explains a central persuasive concept (such as reason, narrative, credibility, symbols, etc.) in easy-to-understand terms and with relevant examples. Most importantly, each chapter suggests specific ways that Progressives at all levels of political involvement can use the concept to create more effective persuasion.

The Progressive's Pocketbook of Persuasion is aimed at activists and concerned Progressives who seek to engage political issues in their everyday lives. With benchmark elections rapidly approaching, effective persuasion skills can greatly improve Progressives' impact as they write letters to the editor, canvass for candidates, and talk with friends and family.

In her focus on persuasion, Dillard reminds progressives of an ancient truth: It's not enough to be right; we must be convincing to others. We must persuade. And the key to doing that, as this smartly crafted book reminds us, is respect for our audience and the realization that language matters. Dillard's Progressive's Pocketbook of Persuasion gives us the essential tools for the work ahead of us.

- Dr. Robert Cox, Environmental activist and Professor of Communication, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The Progressive's Pocketbook is must read for anyone who understands the urgency of rebalancing our political debate. This is a book for scholars and their students who want to understand contemporary political discourse, and it is a book for progressive citizen activists who want to win. Before gearing up for elections, Progressives would be well-served to follow her prescriptions.
